Sangken Festival 2026: Dates & Rituals

The Sangken Festival is the most awaited celebration of the Tai Khamti and Singpho communities of Arunachal Pradesh. It marks the beginning of the Tai New Year, a season of cleansing, gratitude, and new beginnings that every traveller to Namsai should experience at least once.

When is Sangken 2026?

Sangken traditionally falls on the full moon of the Tai month of Shingphra, which lands in mid-April each year. For 2026, the celebrations are expected to begin around 13 April and run until 16 April. The dates shift slightly every year because they follow the lunar calendar, so always confirm the exact schedule before booking your travel.

During these days Namsai town transforms. Monasteries are decorated with flowers and colourful paper umbrellas, drums echo through the streets, and families dress in their finest traditional attire.

The water ritual explained

The heart of Sangken is the ceremonial bathing of Buddha statues. Devotees gently pour scented water over the sacred images while elders chant blessings. Unlike the boisterous Songkran in Thailand, Sangken keeps a gentler, more reverent tone: strangers are invited to join, never doused against their will.
